Sustainability

Header

Sustainability is a buzz word that has grown in popularity by leaps and bounds. We hear it applied to all aspects of life including our own lighting industry. The intention of sustainable design is to "eliminate negative environmental impact completely through skillful, sensitive design". Manifestations of sustainable designs require no non-renewable resources, impact on the environment minimally, and relate people with the natural environment.

Increasing emphasis is being placed on designing with sustainability and we are proud to have so many of our manufactures recognizing and addressing this.  The following are links to web pages from some of our sustainable partners:

A great is example of commitment to sustainable design is the Cradle to Cradle Certification from Lite Control. Cradle to Cradle is one of the first “green” certification programs that uses a multi-criteria approach to address product design and manufacturing from a broad-based sustainability perspective. It moves beyond traditional single-criterion programs that focus only on aspects such as energy or recycling by considering the product itself, the manufacturing processes, and the manufacturer’s practices and policies.

Acuity’s commitment is not to be overlooked either. The Center for Light+Space, the New York sales office and showroom for Acuity Brands Lighting, has earned LEED® certification, landing the prestigious gold rating for its midtown-Manhattan location at 5 Penn Plaza. The recognition underscores Acuity Brands Lighting’s industry leadership position and its commitment to sustainable business practices. It also bolsters the Center for Light+Space’s role as an exemplary “green” innovator for the New York City architectural and lighting design community.

A fantastic summary of lighting’s role within LEED can be found on the LEED Resource Center Website at the Acuity Brands website.
